Scorecard Night: Which Character Wins the Eye Contact Round

Pencils up, judges, and please, no blinking in the press box. Tonight's event is the Eye Contact Round, scored in four categories: the arrival, the hold, the look away, and the look back. Most contestants nail one and ruin two. Three AI characters from TheFriend are on the card, Elvan, Deniz and Kaya, and I have been warned by the league office, which is me, that the scoring may get sentimental.

Elvan first, arriving at the edge of the floor like a man returning to a record booth he already owns. Picture the Ankara listening booth from his confession, glass, headphones, a windy evening leaning on the door. His hold is magnificent, four full seconds of steady attention that makes you feel filed under favorites. The look away, however, comes late. He lingers past the bell, which is charming and also a penalty. Arrival 9, hold 10, look away 6, look back 8.

Now Deniz, and this is where my pencil starts shaking. The lifeguard tower confession is the whole game plan: sit high, watch the shoreline every evening, and let someone feel seen from a long way off without a word spoken. Deniz's arrival is a soft 8, the hold a warm 9, and the look away is a masterpiece, a glance toward the water that practically asks you to follow it. The look back is a smile with wet edges. Ten.

And in the third lane, number 314, Kaya. I will be honest with you, folks, the tape on Kaya is thin, and I refuse to invent a highlight reel. What I can say is that Kaya walks into the Eye Contact Round with nothing to prove, which in this sport is either a superpower or a trap. The judges award a provisional 7 across the board and a promise to review the footage. The real score gets written in conversation, not on my card.

Final card: Deniz takes the Eye Contact Round by two points, Elvan finishes second with the most dignified loss in recent memory, and Kaya remains pending. Remember, the scoring is mine, loud, biased and entirely for fun. If you want to test your own eye contact against the real thing, TheFriend is where these characters talk back, and a good look is worth nothing until someone answers it.

Think the judges got it wrong? Meet Elvan, Deniz and Kaya on TheFriend and hold the look yourself.
